What’s the point of the Self Assessment and Why Should you Get your Players to do it?

How do you know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been? This is exactly  our sentiment when it comes to the WLC’s Self Assessment. You can’t know how far you’ve progressed when the six weeks are over unless you assessed where you started.

Team Captains: This is the point you should really hammer home with your players as to why they should complete as much of the three phases of the Self Assessment as they are able to.

To understand a little more of the “why” behind the Self Assessment, let’s look at the three phases:

  • Phase 1 of the Self Assessment is mandatory when a player registers for the Challenge. This involves inputting their height and starting weight, as well as answering the initial three Quality of Life questions. While we understand your height won’t change (we hope!), many players have a weight change goal and this phase helps record that.

  • Phase 2 actually has four parts: a baseline workout, waist and hip measurements, a “before” photo, and additional Quality of Life questions. Players are incentivized to enter their preliminary numbers in this phase by earning an Indulgence Token. But on a deeper level than that, they’ll earn a more complete view of their success when they enter the final versions of these numbers at the end of the Challenge.

This is very important to communicate to your players because players may not lose pounds during the Challenge, but if they commit to the nutrition component, they are almost certain to lose inches. Therefore, their engagement with Phase 2 will help them understand their achievement.

  • Phase 3 asks the player to record a number of other important markers when it comes to their health. These include: blood work measurements (LDL/HDL, glucose, A1C, etc.), body fat percentage, resting heart rate, and blood pressure. We understand the ability to acquire these numbers may require a trip to a healthcare practitioner and might not be feasible for all players. But players who are able to complete Phase 3 gain a view of the “unseeable” changes that occur inside their bodies. And these changes can be quite compelling. Many people have reported moving these health markers so much that they were able to discontinue use of medications prescribed by their doctors.
